When People Become The Process
From the outside, everything appears to be working.
Customers are served.
Operations continue.
Reports are submitted.
The business keeps moving.
That’s often why the problem goes unnoticed.
Operations KPI aren’t measured by who knows the answers. They’re measured by how well the business continues when they’re not there.
Organisations don’t become dependent on people overnight.
The dependency develops quietly.
One experienced employee knows how to solve an exception.
Another becomes the only person who understands a particular customer.
Someone else remembers the process that was never documented.
Each situation seems reasonable on its own and become the way the business operates.
The Process Exists. The Business Doesn't Follow It.
The procedure is documented.
The workflow has been mapped.
The SOP has been written.
Yet when something unexpected happens, everyone asks the same person.
The business has learnt to rely on experience instead of building capability.
Then people stop following the process.
They start following the person.
When Capability Becomes Dependency
Capable people are valuable.
Every organisation needs them.
The challenge begins when the business quietly transfers operational knowledge from the system into individuals.
Customer history exists in someone’s memory.
Commercial decisions depend on one person’s judgement.
Operational exceptions can only be resolved by the same few people.
The business continues to operate.
But it becomes increasingly difficult to operate without them.
The Cost Isn't Visible Until Later
Nothing appears wrong while those people remain.
Customers continue receiving good service.
Problems continue getting solved.
The business appears resilient.
The difference becomes visible only when someone resigns.
Takes leave.
Burns out.
Or simply reaches the point where they can no longer carry everything themselves.
The disruption then reveals a dependency that had been building for years.
Strong Operations Reduce Dependency
Good operations don’t remove experienced people.
They reduce the business’s dependence on them.
Knowledge is shared.
Decisions become easier to understand.
Processes continue even when individuals aren’t available.
Capability becomes part of the organisation instead of remaining with a few individuals.
That’s what makes an operation resilient.
The business no longer depends on the same people to solve every one of them.
The ALVATIAS Perspective
One of the questions we often ask isn’t,
“Who knows how to do this?”
It’s,
“If that person isn’t here tomorrow, what happens?”
The answer says more about the operation than any process manual.
Businesses become stronger when capability is built into the organisation, not concentrated in a handful of people.
Sustainable performance comes from systems that support people.
Not people who spend every day supporting the system.
