The Most Expensive Lesson I Learned In Logistics
Success is an incomplete measure of an organisation.
For most of my career, I experienced businesses during periods of growth.
Revenue was increasing.
Momentum was visible.
Confidence was high.
Everything appeared structured, strategic and under control.
Then I experienced something different.
I had the opportunity to witness almost the entire operating cycle of a business—from growth, through uncertainty, and into wind-down.
That experience changed how I evaluate an organisations forever.
When The Cycle Turns
Every business eventually reaches a moment when momentum is no longer enough.
Revenue slows.
Pressure increases.
Difficult decisions can no longer be postponed.
That is when organisations stop performing.
They start revealing.
Fallback moments expose what has always existed beneath the surface.
Leadership.
Perspective.
Operational integrity.
Decision quality.
And sometimes, something even more revealing—
The quiet distance between what is said and what is done.
The Quiet Distance Between Words And Actions
Every organisation speaks about values.
Integrity.
People.
Teamwork.
Customer commitment.
These words are easy to say when business is growing.
Real leadership begins when those words become expensive.
When protecting people requires sacrifice.
When supporting customers affects short-term profit.
When doing the right thing is no longer the easiest option.
That is when organisations reveal their real values.
Not through presentations.
Not through annual reports.
Not through mission statements.
But through decisions.
Words build expectations.
Actions reveal character.
Lucky And Unlucky At The Same Time
Looking back, I often describe these experiences as both fortunate and unfortunate.
Unfortunate because you experience the uncertainty yourself.
You live through the difficult conversations.
You see the pressure first-hand.
But fortunate because very few people get to witness the real foundations of an organisation.
You discover who continues taking responsibility.
Who remains committed when circumstances become difficult.
Who quietly disappears.
And who stands beside others when the cycle turns.
Those lessons cannot be learned from success alone.
Growth Is Not The Same As Endurance
Then I stopped judging businesses by their strongest years.
Growth can be created by favourable markets.
Momentum can hide operational weaknesses.
Strong financial results can temporarily compensate for poor leadership.
But difficult periods expose what success often conceals.
Capability.
Responsibility.
Character.
Those qualities determine whether an organisation merely grows…
Or whether it can endure.
The ALVATIAS Perspective
At ALVATIAS, we believe every business has two operating models.
The one visible during growth.
And the one revealed under pressure.
The second one is the one that matters.
Because transformation does not begin by studying success.
It begins by understanding how an organisation behaves when momentum disappears.
That is where leadership becomes visible.
That is where operational integrity is tested.
And that is where the future of the business is often decided.
Executive Insight
Growth tells you what a business can achieve.
Pressure tells you what a business is made of.
The difference between the two may be the most expensive lesson a leader ever learns.
