Hiring? Or Perhaps Outsourcing?
Many organisations don’t need another full-time employee.
The real question isn’t whether to hire.
It’s whether the work requires permanent headcount or experienced execution.
Sometimes the smartest hire isn’t a hire at all.
When a business starts underperforming, the response is usually predictable.
“We need to replace the Country Head.”
“We need more salespeople.”
“Let’s create another department.”
“Increase the targets.”
Most instinctively solve problems by adding people.
Few stop to ask whether they’re solving the right problem.
To be fair, it’s understandable.
Inviting an external party into the business isn’t the norm.
There are always concerns.
Will confidential information remain protected?
Will the advisor be genuinely invested in the outcome?
Will the return justify the investment?
So businesses continue doing what feels safer.
Hiring.
Replacing people.
Building new teams.
Expanding headcount.
But here’s the question I always ask.
Are you buying capability… or simply buying another assumption?
A company may not have the budget to build another department.
Even if it does, how can anyone be certain the next hire is capable of solving the problem?
A strong CV doesn’t guarantee strong execution.
Neither does an impressive title.
During more than twenty years in logistics, I’ve seen organisations recruit experienced professionals only to discover months later that the capability they expected never actually existed.
The interview was convincing.
The résumé looked impressive.
Reality told a different story.
Especially in customs clearance, freight forwarding and operational control, capability cannot be measured by theory alone.
It comes from making decisions under pressure.
From recovering delayed shipments.
From managing authorities.
From solving problems that never appear in training manuals.
That’s why I often encourage businesses to think differently.
Before investing heavily in permanent headcount, ask whether the expertise already exists outside your organisation.
The right external partner shouldn’t simply complete the work.
They should strengthen your organisation while doing it.
Transfer knowledge.
Develop judgement.
Build capability inside your team.
Then decide what truly needs to become permanent.
Because the most expensive resource isn’t outsourcing.
It’s paying for capability that only exists on paper.
At ALVATIAS, we believe businesses shouldn’t build teams based on assumptions.
They should build capability based on evidence.
Sometimes the smartest hire isn’t another employee.
It’s the right expertise at the right time.
